St. Charles Parish officials gathered to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of the new outdoor classroom, now named the Dow Discovery Deck, located at 101 Lower Guide Levee Rd. in Norco.
The project, which began construction on October 6, is now complete and provides a unique, hands-on learning environment for residents and students throughout the parish.
“This project represents a tangible investment in our parks and recreation portfolio”, said Parish President Matthew Jewell. “We’re grateful to Dow for their continued partnership and support. The Dow Discovery Deck will give our kids a place to experience our wetlands firsthand, learn why they matter, and enjoy one of the greatest natural assets we have right here in St. Charles Parish.”
The outdoor classroom was designed by Civil & Sports Design Engineering and constructed by Hammill Construction, LLC. The total cost of the project was $210,000, with $162,000 generously donated by Dow and the remaining funds provided through Coastal Zone Management.
“This project is a great example of the kind of impact we aim for at Dow. At its core, it reflects Dow’s pillars by combining collaboration, sustainability, and a shared commitment to the community,” said Dow SCO Corporate Affairs Manager Taryn Rogers. “It’s rewarding to see this vision come to life in a very real way. We’re especially excited to see it used by the public and students to experience the outdoors and celebrate a part of our parish that reflects who we are and what we’re proud of.”
The Dow Discovery Deck will serve as a hub for environmental and educational programming, including initiatives like Swamp School, which teaches youth about wetland conservation and the role it plays in protecting Louisiana’s coast.
“As a site, we take pride in being part of this community and in how we care for the land around us”, said Dow SCO Site Leader Jason Lankford. “Having spent time living in St. Charles Parish earlier in my career, it’s meaningful to return and help lead work that reflects our responsibility as good stewards and partners. We’re proud to share this space with the public and students as a place that highlights the outdoor heritage and character of this parish.”
The facility features a covered classroom area with shade structures, safety railings, and a fully accessible ramp, ensuring that individuals of all abilities can utilize the space.
“We are excited to bring this outdoor classroom to life and offer new opportunities for learning and engagement,” said Parks and Recreation Director Duane Foret. “This space allows us to expand our programming while providing a fully accessible and safe environment for all residents to enjoy.”
St. Charles Parish Parks and Recreation looks forward to utilizing the Dow Discovery Deck to enhance educational programming and continue fostering a deeper appreciation for the parish’s natural environment.
